Trading Commentary

I entered the week without a position – a truly rare event for me. I remained flat for most of the week but established a few positions on Friday. Will these positions end a choppy streak for my trading? No idea. My job as a trader is to manage the following simple process:

  • See a qualifying pattern
  • Take a trade with an established maximum risk
  • Follow set rules/guidelines in the management of trades
  • Live with the results
  • Trust that over an extended number of trades a profit will be produced

The hardest part of trading is to keep it simple.

Factor Real Time Case Studies, August 29, 2021

It is not my desire for the Factor to be a real-time signaling service. Yet, tracking the entry and management of trades can be of benefit for me to share with Factor Members my thoughts and trade management process.

Four markets will be monitored this week. The first two of these markets meeting entry criteria will become case studies to be reported upon while positions are active — to include entry, sizing, initial protective stop, stop advancement and trade exiting.
Dual tranches will be established in the markets entered with one tranche subject to management based on the weekly bars and the other tranche subject to the daily chart (with active and aggressive trade management).
The candidate markets and the entry levels are as follows:
RTYZ21 — buy stop at 2412.1 OCO 2401.1 SCO (basis nearby contract).
RSX21 — buy stop at 954.1
DBA — buy stop at 19.56
LSUH22 — buy at 507.1 limit
My risk on these trades — if filled — will be 60 basis points (6/10th of 1% of total capital).

Conducting these Case Studies is a trial experiment. If this exercise is beneficial to Factor Members future case studies will be conducted.

Thoughts on a Weekend Afternoon, August 29, 2021

I do not recall the last time I entered a weekend completely flat – NO POSITIONS – in the Factor Prop Account. Going flat was not intentional per se – it was just a matter of a lack of trading signals across the board in all the asset classes I trade.

There is an old adage in the stock market to “sell in May and go away” (until October).

Special Situation in Soybean Oil, August 17, 2021

Some similarities are developing between Soybean Oil in 2021 and Bean Oil in 2008.
  • Both bull markets took Bean Oil prices into the 70s (cents per pound) — the only occasions in history this price level was reached
  • Blow-off tops occurred in both years
  • Prices dropped substantially immediately following each blow-off top (-33% in 2008, -25% in 2021)
  • In 2008, a sluggish 3-month stair-step rally into a secondary top then occurred
  • An 8-week sluggish stair-step rally is now taking place
I am very aware that 2008 could prove as the analog year for the current market. In 2008, prices declined 59% from the bull market top, finally bottoming five months after the secondary top.
The current daily chart displays a possible H&S top pattern. I am committed to taking meaningful chart sell signals. The 14-day ADX reading is presently sub-11. Substantial trends often are launched when daily ADX readings drop toward and below 10.
